When a thin, semi-translucent layer of fibrous material forms a film over the retina, ERM is developed.

In patients with diabetes, tiny blood vessels in the retina may become damaged in a process known as diabetic eye disease.

Retinal detachment is a potentially sight-threatening emergency and must be reviewed by an ophthalmologist within 24-48 hours
